Biographical info: 

Jonathan S. Jones is an assistant professor of history. He is an expert on the United States Civil War and Reconstruction era (1820-1920) as well as the history of modern medicine. His research investigates the aftershocks of the U.S. Civil War on nineteenth and early-twentieth century American society. Jones is the author of Opium Slavery: Civil War Veterans and America’s First Opioid Crisis (UNC Press, 2025). His research has appeared in outlets such as The Washington Post, Slate and Vice, and has been featured on HISTORY, NPR, PBS, and BBC. 

Jones received his doctorate from Binghamton University and has taught at JMU since 2023.
