Yubikeys on Windows to Require PIN
Information Technology-ComputingRecent Windows security updates from Microsoft are changing the behavior of Yubikey devices. After you’ve installed Microsoft’s most recent Windows updates, if you have a Yubikey device, you are required to setup a 4-digit (or longer) PIN number the next time you use it. You need to remember the PIN, because you will be required to enter it for every subsequent use of your Yubikey. The PIN you choose/use is technically independent from any PIN number you may have configured in Windows previously; it is only for your Yubikey. More details, including instructions on changing the PIN if you forget it, are available in the following Knowledge Base article.
The latest Windows updates are coming to JMU devices in early December. Owners of Windows personal devices may install the updates on their computers on their own schedule.
We apologize for any inconvenience related to this unexpected change, and we continue to work to provide you with convenient authenticators in Okta. It is our hope that with the upcoming release of Okta FastPass, the JMU community’s reliance on Yubikeys will decline. If you require assistance, please reach out to the JMU IT Help Desk at (540)568-3555 or helpdesk@jmu.edu.
