(L–R): Liz Thompson, Alyssa Bosley

Alyssa Bosley, senior lecturer and SRM program director in JMU's Hart School of Hospitality, Sport & Recreation Management, and Liz Thompson, open education librarian, were recognized as “Game Changers” during JMU’s home football game against Troy University on Oct. 29.

JMU Athletics created the “Game Changer” award to honor faculty for their outstanding work benefiting the university and JMU Athletics.

Bosley was nominated by Michael Busing, dean of the College of Business, for her commitment to student mentorship, engagement and experiential learning.

“Alyssa is known for going above and beyond to support students both inside and outside the classroom,” said Busing.

Busing said Bosley regularly mentors students through internships, experiential learning trips, career exploration, leadership development, and professional networking opportunities.

“Her influence extends well beyond formal instruction, as countless students credit her guidance with helping them launch successful careers in the sport and recreation industry,” said Busing.

Bosley also brings extensive professional experience in athletics to her work with students. She previously served as JMU’s director of athletics marketing, where she helped strengthen the game-day experience and build engagement among students, fans and alumni.

“Alyssa’s connection to JMU Athletics is particularly meaningful,” said Busing. “She has successfully leveraged her professional experience to create valuable opportunities for current students while maintaining strong relationships throughout the athletics community.”

Busing’s nomination also noted how she helps students connect classroom learning with the professional world and gain experiences that prepare them for careers in sport and recreation.

“As an educator, mentor and leader, Alyssa embodies the partnership between academics and athletics and has had a profound impact on the development of future sport industry professionals,” Busing said.

Thompson was recognized for leading JMU Libraries’ efforts in open education.

“This means working with faculty to discover or create materials for their courses that are accessible, of the highest quality, and won’t break the bank,” said Dean of Libraries Bethany Nowviskie, who nominated Thompson for the award.

“Liz has changed the game for countless JMU students and families by making their textbooks more affordable — or even free,” Nowviskie said.

“Free textbooks? That’s living like a Duke!” she said.

The “Game Changer” program recognizes faculty honorees at JMU home football games throughout the season and is presented by Good Wealth Management, which serves the JMU community.
