The Caring University: Reimagining the Higher Education Workplace after the Great Resignation
As part of the Center for Faculty Innovation's Faculty Well-being Weeks, the CFI and JMU Libraries are excited to host keynote speaker Dr. Kevin McClure for an engaging discussion of his book, The Caring University: Reimagining the Higher Education Workplace after the Great Resignation.
Dr. McClure will share insights from his work and explore some practical ways to implement practices and structures that support a university that is responsive and attentive to well-being.
While all faculty, staff, and administrators are invited to attend either or both parts of the keynote, each is designed for a distinct audience, and they work together to foster a caring university where all can thrive.
- 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. - Unpacking the Caring University for Faculty and Staff
- 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Unpacking the Caring University for Leaders and Administrators
Dr. Kevin McClure is a professor, researcher, and speaker dedicated to reimagining the higher education workplace. Through his writing, keynotes, and workshops, he helps leaders create people-first campuses where faculty and staff can thrive.
He is a Professor of Higher Education and Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. His research on college leadership, workplace culture, and organizational care has been featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education, national conferences, and his latest book, The Caring University: Reimagining the Higher Education Workplace after the Great Resignation.
Higher education is in a workplace crisis. Staff and faculty are overworked, undervalued, and walking away. Leaders want to foster supportive environments, but outdated policies and cultural norms make it difficult to implement lasting change.
In The Caring University, Dr. Kevin McClure provides a research-backed roadmap for transforming campus workplaces. Drawing on his extensive research, real-world case studies, and over 100 interviews, Kevin lays out a practical vision for creating institutions where faculty and staff can thrive—and, in turn, better serve students.
