Mission Statement:  The Center for Multicultural Student Services (CMSS) is an integral part of the student experience at James Madison University. CMSS strives to support campus through dialogue, leadership experiences and celebrations beyond the classroom that honor and value multiple identities.

Students who participate in this experience will gain an understanding of student affairs as a profession and the influence student affairs has on contemporary higher education through the following tasks and activities:
  • Participation in Mosaic Connections Training
    • Early arrival in August to engage in foundational training that introduces departmental values and student engagement strategies.
  • Weekly Staff Engagement
    • Attend CMSS weekly staff meetings and one-on-one meetings with the supervisor, fostering insight into departmental operations and leadership practices.
  • Student Leadership Programming
    • Assist with leadership efforts for CMSS organizations, including ICGC Chapter Check-Ins, communications, and collaborative programming development.
  • Event Planning & Cultural Programming
    • Support multicultural and cultural education initiatives such as:
    • First Fridays
    • Homecoming ICGC Step-Show
    • MLK Celebration Week
    • The Donning
    • Heritage Month programs
  • Advising & Council Support
    • Assist with advising the ICGC Executive Board and Council, gaining experience in student organization advising and governance.
  • Experiential Learning & Conference Participation
    • Participate in at least one student leadership travel opportunity (e.g., ELT, AFLV, CGLC), offering exposure to national and regional student affairs networks.
  • University Representation
    • Represent CMSS at university functions such as Student Org. Night, CHOICES, DREAM (Admissions), and other recruitment/retention fairs.
  • Administrative & Operational Duties
    • Collaborate with the supervisor to create a structured 20-hour work schedule.
    • Submit accurate timesheets and fulfill other duties as assigned by CMSS leadership.

Students who participate in this experience will be exposed to the purposeful application of the following student development, career development, counseling, and/or organizational theories:

  • The assistantship emphasizes dialogue, reflection, and empowerment, especially through advising and programming with historically marginalized student groups.

    • Through leadership development, advising, and mentoring roles, students explore identity, autonomy, and purpose.

    • Active participation in student organizations, programming, and university events reflects the importance of student engagement in learning and development.
  • Komives’ Leadership Identity Development Model
    • Advising ICGC and participating in leadership travel experiences supports the evolution of leadership identity over time.

Students assigned to this site will be able to participate in the following assessment and/or evaluation projects:

  • Program Evaluation
    • Assist in collecting feedback and evaluating outcomes for CMSS programs such as:
    • Mosaic Connections
    • First Fridays
    • MLK Celebration Week
    • The Donning
    • Heritage Month events
  • Leadership Development Assessment
    • Support the evaluation of student leadership growth through tools like reflection forms, pre/post surveys, and feedback from retreats, seminars, and travel experiences (e.g., AFLV, CGLC).
  • Organizational Effectiveness
    • Participate in assessing the impact and engagement of ICGC organizations through chapter check-ins, communication tracking, and collaborative programming reviews.
  • Event Impact Reports
    • Help compile data and qualitative feedback from major events (e.g., Homecoming Step Show, recruitment fairs) to inform future planning and resource allocation.
  • Student Staff Performance Reviews
    • Contribute to the development or facilitation of peer and supervisor evaluations for student leaders and CMSS staff, aligning with student employment evaluation procedures.
  • Departmental Strategic Planning
    • Engage in reflective discussions and data-informed planning during weekly staff meetings and one-on-one sessions with supervisors.

Students who participate in this experience will be evaluated and provided on-going feedback in the following ways

  • Weekly Staff Meetings
    • Students engage in regular departmental meetings where they receive updates, share progress, and receive informal feedback from peers and supervisors.
  • One-on-One Supervisor Meetings
    • Scheduled individual check-ins with the supervisor provide space for personalized feedback, goal setting, and reflection on performance and growth.
  • Student Employment Evaluation
    • Formal evaluations are recommended once per contract term using the university’s student employee evaluation form. This includes assessment of job performance, professionalism, and contributions to departmental goals.
  • Project-Based Feedback
    • Students receive feedback on specific tasks such as event planning, advising, and programming through debriefs and collaborative reflection.
  • Leadership Development Reflection
    • Participation in leadership retreats and travel experiences often includes structured reflection and feedback on leadership competencies and growth.
  • Collaborative Review
    • Students may be involved in reviewing program outcomes and organizational effectiveness, which includes peer and supervisor input.

 Specific expectations of students assigned to this site include:

  • Professionalism & Accountability
    • Submit accurate timesheets each pay period; failure to do so for two consecutive periods may result in termination.
    • Maintain a consistent 20-hour work schedule in collaboration with the supervisor.
  • Engagement & Participation
    • Arrive early in August to participate in Mosaic Connections training.
    • Attend weekly CMSS staff meetings and regular one-on-one meetings with the supervisor.
    • Represent CMSS at university events such as Student Org. Night, CHOICES, DREAM (Admissions), and other recruitment/retention fairs.
  • Leadership & Advising
    • Assist with student leadership efforts including ICGC Chapter Check-Ins, communications, and collaborative programming.
    • Support and advise the ICGC Executive Board and Council.
    • Participate in at least one leadership travel opportunity, such as AFLV, CGLC, or an Experiential Learning Trip.
  • Programming & Cultural Education
    • Support CMSS cultural programs including:
    • First Fridays
    • Homecoming ICGC Step Show
    • MLK Celebration Week
    • The Donning
    • Heritage Month events
  • Collaboration & Communication
    • Assist with presentations, panels, trainings, retreats, and workshops.
    • Maintain weekly communication with ICGC organizations and collaborate on programming.
  • Flexibility & Initiative
    • Fulfill other duties as assigned by CMSS leadership.
    • Demonstrate initiative and adaptability in a dynamic, student-centered environment.
