Mission Statement: Academic Student Services advances the university’s commitment to student success by providing services and support that foster academic progress, and personal development. We deliver the following key services:
- We administer and support institutional processes related to undergraduate academic probation and suspension, ensuring timely communication and consistent guidance for students navigating academic challenges.
- We coordinate the re-entry process for students returning to the university after academic probation or suspension, as well as those who have been away from the university for two or more years without earning a degree – providing guidance and support to help them successfully resume their academic journey.
- We lead the Academic Success Program (ASP), offering targeted resources, mentoring, and skill-building opportunities designed to promote student success.
- We provide strategic oversight and operational support for the JMU Honor Council, promoting a culture of academic integrity through education and case management.
Functional Areas: Academic Student Services, the Academic Success Program and the JMU Honor Council
Students who participate in this experience will gain an understanding of student affairs as a profession and the influence student affairs has on contemporary higher education through the following tasks and activities:
- Supervise ASP student staff, including conducting observations during workshops and study halls to ensure quality and effectiveness.
- Collaborate with student staff and campus partners to design and enhance ASP workshops that support academic skill development and student success.
- Provide oversight and logistical coordination for all ASP workshops and study hall sessions.
- Plan and facilitate comprehensive training for ASP student staff at the start of each semester to ensure preparedness and alignment with program goals.
- Organize and lead regular staff meetings and professional development opportunities to foster growth and engagement among ASP student staff.
- Manage the recruitment, interview, and selection process for ASP student staff for the Spring 2027 and Fall 2027 semesters.
- Supervise the completion of administrative tasks necessary for the effective operation and maintenance of the ASP program.
- Maintain consistent and responsive communication with ASP students through in-person meetings, phone calls, and email correspondence.
- Lead planning, marketing, and publicity efforts to promote ASP services and employment opportunities.
Students who participate in this experience will be exposed to the purposeful application of the following student development, career development, counseling, and/or organizational theories:
- Chickering’s Theory of Psychosocial Student Development
- Work to create an environment in ASP meetings, workshops and study halls that support student participants’ maturation through the seven vectors.
- Help the graduate assistant understand the struggles facing individual students.
- Help the graduate assistant work with student staff to understand their individual struggles and to help them reach the later vectors.
- Perry’s Theory of Cognitive Student Development
- Help graduate assistant and student employees develop workshop plans that will assist students in moving through the stages.
- Help student employees to understand the struggles many students in earlier stages face in the academic setting.
- Provides the graduate assistant with a framework for both “challenging” and “supporting students.”
- Gardener’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences
- Students can explore the ways in which they learn best and techniques to utilize this knowledge.
- Rogers’ Theory of Experiential Learning:
- Provides reasoning for why our students should be actively engaged in all classes, and with all material.
Students assigned to this site will be able to participate in the following assessment and/or evaluation projects:
- Compiling report detailing and comparing the outcome of pre- and post- ASP LASSI assessments.
- Evaluating ASP staff.
- Monitoring compliance and progress of ASP participants.
Students who participate in this experience will be evaluated and provided on-going feedback in the following ways
- Supervisory meetings
- Mid-year evaluation
- Final evaluation
Specific expectations of students assigned to this site include:
- To perform tasks in a timely, organized, and professional manner
- To request assistance when needed
- To adhere to confidentiality guidelines
- To be on time.
- Meeting with supervisor on a regular basis
