Understanding and Using the Grievance Procedure

The Department of Employment Dispute Resolution's (EDR's) Understanding and Using the Grievance Procedure course is now available online for all state employees, at no cost, via the Commonwealth of Virginia's Knowledge Center. Employees can access the Center and this course via EDR's website.

Learn the fundamentals of using the grievance procedure to resolve workplace disputes. Participants will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the grievant, management respondents, agency head, the Department of Employment Dispute Resolution, hearing officers, and the courts in resolving grievances. 3 hours. MVP required course. This course provides credit toward HRI and VaCPM.

Who should take this course: state employees, supervisors, managers, and human resource staff. NOTE: All supervisors and managers are statutorily mandated to take this course.

Step 1: Go to https://covkc.virginia.gov
Step 2: Click "Register"
Step 3: Choose "I am a state employee, entering this site for the first time"
Step 4: Enter your first name, last name, birthdate and choose "Other State Agency" for root organization
Step 5: Choose "Course Information & Enrollment" from the drop-down list in the top, right-hand corner
Step 6: Click "Go"
Step 7: Type "Grievance" in the Keyword search box
Step 8: Click "Search". The Grievance Training will appear in the course availability area.

Once you have completed the training, print the confirmation page and mail it to Training and Development, MSC 7009.
