Workshop Description:
Diabetes is a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. Diabetes can lead to serious complications and premature death. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the US. The overall risk for death among people with diabetes is about double that of people without diabetes. Fortunately, diabetics can take steps to control the disease and lower the risk of complications.
This workshop presented by CommonHealth will focus on Type 2 diabetes because it accounts for 90-95 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes in adults, and the diagnosis for children and adolescents is on the rise. Additionally, women who have gestational diabetes have a 35-60% chance of developing diabetes (mostly Type 2), in the next 10-20 years.
