The UREC Aquatics program offers informal drop-in recreation and educational programs in our state-of-the-art indoor Aquatics Center which features two pools, a hydrotherapy spa, and a sauna! Educational programs include:

American Red Cross Safety certification courses at UREC are designed to help you prepare for emergencies. Certifications offered include:

  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid
  • Lifeguarding Pre-Requisite Test
  • Lifeguarding

UREC facilities are primarily for JMU students, faculty, and staff (view our access policies). This includes drop-in use of the Aquatics Center and most of the Aquatics and Safety educational programs. However, Swim Lessons are now open that anyone, regardless of affiliation to JMU!

Registration takes place online at or at the UREC Program Registration Desk. For a list of current offerings, please click the "Register Now" button and click on the specific course of interest. Please direct registration issues or questions to the UREC Welcome Center (stop by or call 540-568-8734). Please note that for Safety Certification Courses, plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early for your course. If you arrive later than the scheduled start time, you will not be permitted entry into the class and will not be eligible to receive a refund.
