To define a win-win, one need only look at Green Streets, the joint brainchild of community members in one of San Francisco’s toughest neighborhoods and David Mauroff, vice president at Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco. Approached for jobs by residents, many of whom had been incarcerated or impacted by violence, David teamed up with them. Together, they identified a significant need — refuse collection and recycling in the city’s drug- and crime-ridden public housing — and turned a real need into real jobs. The green waste management business they built together provides steady work and fulfills a community need. As a result, crime dropped, neighborhoods were cleaned up, and many lives headed down the wrong path were turned around in a victory for positive change.
