Description of the Major
The School of Media Arts and Design offers a program of study that prepares you for careers that rely on mass media. Program areas of concentration allow you to pursue interests in journalism (print, broadcast, and online), television and video production, corporate communications or converged media (print, video & web production). The major also prepares you for advanced graduate school study in the fields of mass communication and related areas such as journalism, corporate communication, visual communication or digital production.

Declaring the Major
New Freshmen and Transfer Students
Declare the media arts and design major when you register for orientation. This will enable you to enroll in SMAD 101.
Currently Enrolled Major Changers
Submit a "Change or Declaration of Major" form to the School of Media Arts and Design in Harrison Hall, room 0276.
Application for Admission
You must apply for full admission to the major. Complete all admission materials including a 500 word essay, competency test and enrollment in or completion of SMAD 101 with a grade of "C-" or better.
Applications are due the last Friday in January. An admissions committee in the school reviews applications and offers admission based on availability to the most qualified students.
Progressing in the Major
Enrollment in or completion of SMAD 101 with a grade of "C-" or better. All other SMAD courses are restricted to admitted majors only.
You must apply and be fully admitted to SMAD to progress in the major.
