Description of the Major

As a dietetics major, you will complete course work requirements to become a generalist in dietetics and will be exposed to all facets of this dynamic profession. Following the completion of the program in dietetics, you should plan to meet the experience requirements for registered dietitian status by completing a dietetic internship (DI). The Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) at James Madison University is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of The American Dietetic Association.

You will study a wide variety of subjects including food and nutrition science, chemistry, physiology, anatomy and microbiology that will prepare you for meeting the requirements for a registered dietitian. Registered dieticians work in a wide variety of employment settings including health care, business and industry, community/public health, education, research, government agencies and private practice.

New Freshmen and Transfer Students
Declare the dietetics major when you register for orientation.

Currently Enrolled Major Changers
Complete a "Change or Declaration of Major” form and obtain the signature of the department head in the Health and Human Services Building, room 3126.

Progressing in the Major

Dietetics majors who wish to receive a signed Verification Statement as part of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) must complete all nutrition courses with at least a grade of C and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 in all DPD classes.
