Description of the Major

The R.N. to B.S.N. program provides flexible, partially online learning opportunities for students who are graduates of community college or diploma schools and are licensed registered nurses (R.N.). Classes are offered once a week and partially online so you can maintain employment while completing the B.S.N. degree. The program provides a foundation for professional practice and will equip students for further opportunities afforded through graduate study and advance practice.

Currently Enrolled Major Changers
Nurses with an RN license and associate degree from a Virginia community college are eligible to apply.

Students should meet the following requirements:
1. Completion of General Education requirements at JMU or the Virginia Community College System equivalents;
2. An approved associates’ degree from a Virginia community college;
3. A cumulative GPA of at least 2.80;
4. An unrestricted RN license in any state and at least 12 months of full-time practice experience within the past 3 years;
5. Be able to meet the department’s technical standards for nursing practice.

Progressing in the Major

Satisfactory completion of a statistics course which may be taken concurrently with first or second semester courses.

Once admitted into nursing, students must complete all nursing courses with a grade of C or better. Students who earn a grade of D or F may repeat the course one time with departmental approval. Students who receive a grade of D or F a second time are not permitted to continue in the program.

Students are NOT required to maintain a specific GPA once they are enrolled in the major.
