Description of the Major
The foreign language major is designed to develop your proficiency in your language of study and to give you a strong background in literature and culture. Majors are encouraged to spend a significant amount of time abroad immersed in the language and culture. The major also offers professional courses such as business French, German, Italian and Spanish; medical Spanish; law enforcement Spanish and legal Spanish. Culture courses encompass topics such as theatre, art, cinema, and media of the country or region of study.
A major in a foreign language can open up a wealth of opportunities including positions in teaching, government and cultural organizations.

Declaring the Major
New Freshmen and Transfer Students
Declare the modern foreign languages major when you register for orientation.
Currently Enrolled Major Changers
Submit a "Change or Declaration of Major” form to the Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures department head in Keezell Hall, room 301.
Progressing in the Major
If you have had two or more years of language study in high school or at a previous institution and have not taken the SAT II in that language, you must take the JMU Foreign Language Placement exam if you plan to continue study in the same language at JMU.

To progress in the major you should remain in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
