Description of the Major
The foreign language major is designed to develop your proficiency in your language of study and to give you a strong background in literature and culture. Title are encouraged to spend a significant amount of time abroad immersed in the language and culture. The major also offers professional courses such as business French, German, Italian and Spanish; medical Spanish; law enforcement Spanish, legal Spanish, and Translation and Interpretation. The professional courses are part of professional minors.
Culture courses encompass topics such as theatre, art, cinema, and media of the country or region of study.

Submit a "Change or Declaration of Major" form to the Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures department head in Keezell Hall, room 301.
Progressing in the Major
If you have had two or more years of language study in high school or at a previous institution and have not taken the SAT II in that language, you are required to take the JMU Foreign Language Placement exam if you plan to continue study in the same language at JMU.

To progress in the major you should remain in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
