Description of the Major
This major prepares you to become a Certified Athletic Trainer. Areas of study include injury prevention, emergency care, injury evaluation, and rehabilitation of athletes and patients who are physically active. Athletic training is not an open major. Students are selected through a competitive admission process with applications due during your third semester.

Declaring the Major
New Freshmen and Transfer Students
Declare athletic training when you register for orientation and complete all pre-professional course work. Students complete the pre-professional clinical competencies under the supervision of a certified athletic trainer.
Currently Enrolled Major Changers
Submit a "Change or Declaration of Major” form to the health sciences department head in the Health and Human Services building, room 3126.
Progressing in the Major
Admission decisions are made upon students' completion of the 18-hour pre-requisite courses, usually in the sophomore year.
1. Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50 in all coursework
2. Make a grade of “C” or better in the following prerequisite courses:
- a college level human anatomy course (BIO 290 or equivalent);
- a basic college-level athletic training course (ATEP 205);
- ATEP 206
- ATEP 291
- Have an Emergency Cardiac Care Certification card or equivalent
New Transfer Students
In addition to the above requirements, if you are a new transfer student seeking early decision admission you must have satisfactorily completed a minimum of one semester of the pre-professional phase at JMU prior to enrolling in ATEP 291; complete ATEP 291; obtain two recommendations from Certified Athletic Trainers who have supervised you; you must be enrolled in ATEP 206 for spring semester.
