Prior Learning Assessment Criteria

Experiential Learning must meet the following criteria to earn JMU credit.

- Credit awarded is for learning, not experience.

- Credit is granted for college level learning which meets the academic standards of JMU.

- Assessment is completed by faculty experts in relevant subject area.

- Credit earned through an assessment of prior learning can not be duplicated through any other mechanism for earning credit.

- Evaluation may result in awarding "no credit", if appropriate. (Where credit is denied, a clear explanation should be provided.)

- Awards for actual college course credit are appropriate when learning presented is relevant to actual course competencies.

- Ideally, credit is awarded for learning which includes both theory and practice. (Partial credit may be granted if either theory or practice component is documented.)

- Fees paid by the student reflect the service performed, not the amount of credit awarded.

- Prior learning credit is not transferable.

- There is no maximum credit award, but all Adult Degree Program students must earn a minimum of 22 non-experiential learning credits at JMU.

- Only students currently enrolled at JMU in the Adult Degree Program who have successfully completed BIS 200C, Portfolio Development, and who have an approved degree program are eligible to submit a portfolio of experiential learning for evaluation.

- It is the student's responsibility to convey learning and provide evidence of learning through narrative, documentation, and interview.

THESE CRITERIA MATCH THOSE OF OTHER PROGRAMS IN ACCREDITED INSTITUTIONS AND SATISFY THE CRITERIA FOR ACCREDITATION AS DESIGNATED FOR PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT BY THE SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS (SACS).
