Who are Thomas and Karyn Dingledine?

The Dingledine family has a long tradition at James Madison University. Thomas and Karyn Dingledine are relatives of an impressive list of Dingledines who were memorable faculty and staff at Madison College and James Madison University in the mid 1900’s through the 1970’s. Thomas and Karyn want to recognize and encourage JMU students with a demonstrated vision to impact others. The recipients of the scholarship should exemplify excellence in academic achievement, leadership, and community service.

Scholarship information:

  • Six scholarships are given annually by the Bluestone Scholarship Selection Committee.
  • Each award amount is equivalent to full in-state tuition for four years at JMU.
  • Top scholarship candidates will be notified by February 1, 2008 and will be invited to campus for an interview on February 17, 2008.
  • Students who apply by the November 1, 2007 deadline for the Thomas and Karyn Dingledine Scholarship will remain in the pool to be considered for the Madison Achievement Scholarships.

Application process:

  • Early Action freshman application to JMU is required.
  • To access the Thomas and Karyn Dingledine Scholarship application, use the link at the bottom of this page. There is a preferred Adobe PDF application to download as well as a Microsoft Word format option. The PDF file requires an Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat program.
  • Two letters of recommendation and two 500-word essays are required in addition to the application. The essay questions are as follows:
    • Describe a time you were under pressure to make a critical decision. How did you respond? What factors affected your decision? What was the impact of your decision? Faced with the same situation, what did you learn from your experience that might affect how you would make the same decision today?
    • Describe your dream for a different and better world.  How might you manifest your dream into reality?  How are you presently working to better the lives of others in fulfillment of your dream?
  • All scholarship application materials must be mailed in one envelope and postmarked no later than November 1, 2007 to be considered for Thomas and Karyn Dingledine Scholarship interviews.

Requirements to maintain eligibility:

  • Recipients must participate in a leadership program under the mentorship of Senior Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Mark Warner.
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA must be maintained each year.
