Hello LLI members!
It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 3 months since I first wrote to introduce myself as your new Director! It feels like no time has passed, and yet, when I look back at the last 90 days, I’m excited to think of all the people I’ve met, relationships I’ve begun to forge, improvements we’ve made, and all the incredible things we’ve got coming up!
I have been blown away by the welcoming, inquisitive, open, and connected community of learners that make up JMU’s Lifelong Learning Institute. I’ve loved watching you interpret your dreams, learn about music theory and self-publishing. I’ve loved seeing you move your body through yoga and fitness classes, create beautiful artwork out of plants, and play chess. Your stories have fascinated me. Your accomplishments astound me. And most importantly, your eagerness to grow your ways of thinking and your skills has inspired me to continue to create new opportunities for you through LLI!
I’ve spent a lot of the past 90 days improving how we do things at the LLI office. So even though you might not see those changes, I hope eventually the benefits will reach you through clearer and more frequent communication, easier access to information, and more time for staff to help and develop new ideas!
For example, have you looked at our updated FAQ page on our website? Where previously it was just information on how to use Zoom, now we’ve got answers to some of our more common questions on parking, class registration, and our weather protocol!
Also, if you use Facebook, be sure to give us a follow there! We’re now posting to that page weekly with information about what is coming up, sharing pictures, and important reminders.
Besides the small details that make for a successful organization, we’re also working on bigger things: new software for class proposals that should be easier for instructors (and me!), new and improved instructor training, a membership handbook, increased visibility in the community and with our partners, and a massive push for fundraising in 2026 to help find an even bigger and better space to grow into!
I can’t wait to celebrate the close of another year at our Membership and Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on June 12th. I also cannot wait to keep working for you to make LLI the best place to learn!
Thank you for your patience, your ideas, and your support over the last 12 weeks – let’s keep it going!
Sincerely – Katie
