SUMMARY: Get to know Olivia Brown, a first-year graduate student in the Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication Graduate Program, and aspiring Double Duke.
The path to graduate school is not always a simple one, and while my own journey has been no exception, I can assure you that it has led me to a destination filled with endless opportunities. My name is Olivia Brown, and I recently began my first year as a graduate student in the WRTC Graduate Program. As an avid writer and researcher, I am so excited for the opportunity to write blogs on this forum from the perspective of a JMU Graduate student!
This past spring, I earned my undergraduate degree in WRTC from JMU, with a minor in Criminal Justice. Writing has always been an integral part of my life, and something I have always loved to do in my free time. After starting out as a biology major, I quickly realized that my passion for writing and research was more than just a hobby. By integrating my major and minor together, I became particularly interested in research and writing regarding advocacy and nonprofit organizations.
When a professor first introduced me to the WRTC Graduate Program, graduate school had not been on my radar. I initially felt overwhelmed by the sudden realization that graduate school offered seemingly limitless opportunities to explore. While considering my options, I ultimately knew that the WRTC Graduate Program would not only continue to advance my writing skills but also offer a supportive environment with dedicated faculty.
On the rare occasion that I am not writing, I enjoy rotating between my favorite Harrisonburg coffee shops, working at the local animal shelter, and appreciating the endless nature trails in the Shenandoah Valley.
I cannot wait to share my experiences as I navigate this new chapter, and I hope to provide insight into graduate life here for fellow or prospective JMU Graduate School Dukes!
