Introducing Maya, a graduate student
NewsSUMMARY: Maya Winder is a second-year graduate student in the Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication program. Follow along her journey as a JMU graduate student.
Graduate school can be an intimidating option in mind for anyone, but I say it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. My name is Maya Winder, a second-year graduate student in the WRTC program and I welcome you to my higher education journey. Welcome! I am writing these blogs to share my experience as a graduate student at JMU.
Writing has always been my best skill, so much so that I decided to hone my skills in writing and technical communication to help multiple people from different backgrounds understand complicated topics through writing. My main interests are health and science writing, but I also enjoy writing for entertainment and fun. When I’m not working or studying, I’m usually browsing different shops, catching up on my favorite TV shows, playing board games with friends, reading, and of course writing!
I attended JMU for my undergraduate degree in WRTC, then immediately began my master’s degree right after. The decision to pursue a graduate degree was difficult. All kinds of questions would nag at me: Where should I go? What program is best for me? Is getting the degree worth it? What will the atmosphere be like?
I ultimately decided to continue attending JMU for the WRTC program because not only did the program align with my goals, but the instructors within the program are very welcoming and helpful people. Now a year into the program, I can say with confidence that it has been and continues to be a very supportive and abundant environment.
A year has passed since beginning my two-year program, so I hope you’ll join me as I reflect and share my lessons and experiences.
