Transition to Cloud-Based Storage and Endpoint Backup Services

As part of our continuous commitment to modernizing campus technology and enhancing data security, JMU IT is transitioning to cloud-first data solutions. Effective September 15, 2026, Endpoint Services will no longer perform manual local data backups during new computer setups or system reimages. Instead, user-level endpoint backups are being phased out in favor of secure, centrally managed cloud storage.

To ensure your files are always protected, JMU IT strongly encourages the use of Microsoft OneDrive and Microsoft SharePoint/Teams. Before doing so, we also encourage you to ensure you are following the Data Storage Standard to keep your data in the right place. Transitioning your data to these platforms offers significant benefits:

• Enhanced Reliability: data is protected against physical hardware failure or loss.
• Universal Access: access your files from any device, anywhere.
• Real-Time Backups: files sync automatically without requiring a campus network or VPN connection.
