MacOS Sonoma Has Arrived

Note: JMU departments should replace any computers built before 2019, now or in early FY2025.

The latest version of MacOS, Sonoma, is now available for installation on JMU Macs through the JMU Self Service application. To find out whether you need to install it, check your macOS version by going to the Apple menu in the corner of your screen and choosing “About this Mac.” If you do not see “Sonoma” next to macOS, your Mac needs an upgrade. The Sonoma upgrade can be found under the title “macOS Sonoma Upgrade” in the Operating System category of Self Service.

Sonoma Upgrade

Employees with a Mac are asked to install Sonoma at their convenience, but installation is required by April 11. Anyone using a compatible JMU Mac will be prompted to install Sonoma in advance of the deadline.

As of publication, there are over 500 JMU Macs that are not compatible with Sonoma. If you are running an older Mac that is not compatible with Sonoma, ask your department to purchase a replacement computer as soon as possible. JMU IT recommends that departments replace computers that are out of warranty, but it is against JMU policy to operate a computer without a vendor-supported operating system that receives regular security updates.

If you have questions or require assistance, please contact the IT Help Desk at (540)568-3555 or helpdesk@jmu.edu. Technology Coordinators for campus departments have also been provided with documentation on the Sonoma upgrade experience and can also answer many questions.
