SUMMARY: The JMU Debate Team will close-out 2021 as the #6 ranked debate program in the nation, according to the rankings released by the governing body of intercollegiate competitive debating, the Cross-Examination Debate Association (CEDA).

Harrisonburg, VA, December 24, 2021—The JMU Debate Team will close-out 2021 as the #6 ranked debate program in the nation, according to the rankings released by the governing body of intercollegiate competitive debating, the Cross-Examination Debate Association (CEDA).

The debating Dukes won three tournaments and dozens of awards in the fall semester, leaving them ranked higher at the mid-year point than at any point in the past 10 years.

JMU is currently ranked above traditional debate powerhouses like Wake Forest, Dartmouth and Northwestern University.

The CEDA rankings reflect total program performance, not just the results of a single team of competitors.

“Our program profile is that we are accessible to anyone who wants to try debating,” program director Dr. Michael Souders said, “Our ranking is a testament to that commitment. All six competitors who have won tournaments this year had no policy debate experience just six months ago.”

The JMU Debate Team will resume competition at the University of Indiana in January.
