JMU faculty members recognized as ‘Game Changers’

On Sept. 5, two JMU faculty members were recognized as “Game Changers” during the Dukes’ first home football game of the season against Liberty University.

In 25 years at JMU, Dr. Leigh Nelson, professor of communication studies, has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to transformative teaching and student mentorship.

Nelson’s teaching record reflects exceptional breadth, depth and innovation, says her nominator, Dr. Traci Zimmerman (’92, ’94M).

“Students consistently praise her ability to make complex concepts accessible and meaningful, and they describe her as caring, enthusiastic and deeply invested in their success,” said Zimmerman, dean of the College of Arts and Letters. “Her genuine care for students, collaborative spirit, and tireless efforts to make learning meaningful contribute daily to a supportive and vibrant academic community and is truly a ‘Game Changer’ for JMU.”

Alison Trocchio, operations and engagement coordinator in the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Office of Creative Propulsion, was nominated by CVPA Dean Rubén Graciani.

“Alison has been a true Game Changer for the Office of Creative Propulsion during a year of tremendous growth and transformation,” Graciani said. “She played a pivotal leadership role in our successful transition to a new building, The Arts at 131 W. Grace Street, and helped launch new initiatives, including the Imagining America Open Forums, and expanded arts-engagement programming between JMU and the community through our ArtsMobile and First Fridays events.”

“Through her exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, community relationships, and proactive problem-solving, Alison has significantly increased the office’s operational capacity and community impact,” Graciani said.

JMU Athletics recognizes Game Changer honorees at home football games throughout the season. The Game Changer program is presented by the financial advisers at Good Wealth Management, serving the Madison community.
