Center for Faculty Innovation

Consider becoming a faculty associate in the Teaching or  Scholarship Areas of the Center for Faculty Innovation (CFI). The CFI is a community of faculty and educational developers collaborating to create opportunities for professional growth and innovation. Our vision is to cultivate inclusive communities of peers committed to helping each other succeed, advancing individual and organizational change.

CFI Faculty Associates are JMU instructional faculty who join a dynamic, innovative, and collaborative team, typically for a three-year period, contributing substantially to the creation, delivery, and evaluation of programs that support the professional development of JMU faculty.

The CFI is committed to working as a team of educational developers that represent diverse viewpoints, backgrounds, and experiences. We encourage all interested faculty to apply.

The CFI's Teaching Area team supports faculty as teachers through a range of programs, including one-on-one consultations, one-off workshops and roundtables, reading groups, semester-long faculty learning communities and institutes, the Teaching Toolbox email newsletter, and others. Our goal is to enable faculty to be highly effective instructors while also flourishing as scholars and academic citizens and leaders. Our work is collaborative: While we all have our own programs that we create, we meet regularly to discuss broader questions, provide each other feedback, and collaborate as the inspiration strikes us.

We are looking for applicants with teaching experience as well as existing or evolving expertise in specific aspects of good teaching (such as different forms of collaborative learning, Universal Design for Learning, Transparency in Learning and Teaching, integrative learning, or others — we are open to what you have to bring). Willingness to contribute to the Teaching Toolbox is a plus. Applicants should be motivated and able to work on their own as well as in a team and across academic differences (faculty/administration/staff, different departments and colleges, qual/quant, and so on). It helps if candidates are well-organized and able to manage programs and events. If you have any questions, please contact Andreas Broscheid (broschax@jmu.edu).

The CFI's Scholarship Area offers a rich and responsive array of programming designed to support faculty scholarly pursuits. These programs include time, space, and community for faculty to work on their scholarship both on and off-campus, workshops and presentations to support faculty productivity and develop scholarly skills, writing accountability groups, support for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), reading groups, panels, one-on-one consultations, and more.

We hope applicants will possess familiarity with the diverse forms of scholarship and dissemination in higher education including collaborative research projects and SoTL, literature on enhancing scholarly productivity, ability to support scholarship skill development across a diversity of disciplines, awareness of trends in higher education, strong project management and administrative skills, first-hand experience with scholarship initiatives offered by the CFI, and, most importantly, a commitment to learning, working as part of a team, and participating in feedback loops. Questions about the Scholarship Area position may be directed to Dayna Henry (henryds@jmu.edu), Tim Ball (balltc@jmu.edu), and/or Melanie Shoffner (shoffnme@jmu.edu).

CFI Faculty Associates receive either a  course release (negotiated with their Academic Unit Head) or a $3,600 stipend per semester  for their contributions (approximately 8-10 hours per week). Selected applicants will begin in August 2026 and work throughout the academic year. There may be paid summer opportunities available.

When applying, the following materials must be submitted:

  1. Cover letter, indicating interest and experience
  2. Current curriculum vitae (CV)
  3. The names and email addresses for three references
  4. Endorsement statement from your Academic Unit Head (AUH). The endorsement need only indicate their knowledge and support of the application. It can take the following simple form:

"I support  ___________________'s application for the position of CFI Faculty Associate.

Name: __________Title: ___________"

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Submit application items #1, #2, and #3 via email attachment to cfi@jmu.edu.
  • Ensure that #4, noted above, is submitted on your behalf via email (Your AUH may also be listed as a reference for #3.)

All Application Materials must be submitted through email to the CFI at cfi@jmu.edu by Monday, May 4, 2026, 11:59 p.m.

If you are interested in working with the CFI in other capacities, please reach out to us at cfi@jmu.edu.
