TD1675: Living with Alzheimer’s Series: Part 4 - Arts Fusion: Social Interaction through the Arts
Workshop Description: This session will focus on the Arts Fusion: Social Interaction through the Arts program.
Arts Fusion offers a variety of creative and cultural opportunities for those affected by memory loss in the Alzheimer’s Association Central and Western Virginia Chapter area. The mission of Arts Fusion is to create an environment through the arts that promotes creative expression, interpersonal connections, and enjoyment for persons with dementia. Arts Fusion also extends arts opportunities to caregivers and family members of those with memory loss as a way to reduce stress and reestablish connections with their loved ones.
Sharon Celsor-Hughes, Creative Arts Director for the Alzheimer’s Association, will provide an overview of the Arts Fusions programs, as well as, anecdotal stories that demonstrate the impact these activities have had on persons with dementia, their family members, and professional caregivers. Michael and Valerie Cole, participants of the early stage Arts Fusion program in Charlottesville, will share why they value their monthly outing to the University of Virginia Art Museum and their hope and encouragement in the establishment of a similar program at JMU.
