Note: This session is capped at 32 participants.
Session Description: Safe Zone is a voluntary network of faculty, staff and students who believe that every member of the university community should have an equal opportunity to grow and learn in a safe and open environment. You may have seen Safe Zone stickers posted throughout the university—these stickers are a symbol for people at JMU who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender that the work space is a safe and inclusive one. If you would like to learn how to create safe spaces for students and why this is an important endeavor, join us for this interactive presentation and discussion! Many faculty and staff cannot find time in their busy schedules to attend one of our pre-scheduled Safe Zone trainings each semester, so we want to bring the training to them via the Diversity Conference. Many faculty and staff have expressed their unfamiliarity with why and how they can be supportive of the LGBT population and we believe this session will address those concerns.
