Note: This session is capped at 21 participants.
Session Description: This session will focus on a diversity program entitled “We are JMU” which was established by JMU’s Orientation Office to provide diversity education to incoming first-year and transfer students. The program is part of 1787 August Orientation and focuses on expanding students’ definition of diversity through a video presentation including student interviews and narratives, annual JMU opportunities for involvement, resources and audience activities. In collaboration with the Center for Assessment and Research Studies (CARS), Orientation created the following learning outcome to plan and assess the program, “As a result of attending 1787 August Orientation, students will be able to identify various facets of diversity”. This session will provide faculty and staff with an understanding of what students are learning in relation to diversity education during their 1787 August Orientation experience and prior to beginning their academic coursework.
