The purpose of this presentation is to provide ideas and suggestions for college faculty and staff to utilize in developing ways of illustrating the concept of
privilege to students in classroom or other settings. One of the presenters will share how she used the existence of the Tunnel of Oppression and the House of
Privilege as a required experience for her students. This will be used as one example of how faculty and staff can coordinate supporting activities or experiences
to complement a larger campus program on privilege. We will also discuss how the concepts of these programs can be adapted on a smaller scale to illustrate
privilege in multiple contexts.
As background information, The House of Privilege will be held March 16th through March 18th in Chandler Hall TV and Study lounges on JMU's campus. For the last
two years, the Tunnel of Oppression has drawn audiences numbering between one and four hundred. This year, a committee was created to provide more attention to
the program. In addition to a number of other changes, we hope to increase attendance through a more assertive advertising campaign. Secondly, with the addition
of the "Windows of Opportunity" to the traditional "Tunnel" model, we are hoping that we will activate our students to embrace the similarities and the positive
diversity that exists between people and to de-construct the artificial barriers that are created by privilege and emphasis on faulty constructs of difference.
Included with this proposal are copies of comments made after last year's Tunnel of Oppression. Notwithstanding the problems listed above, the Tunnel has had a
positive impact on the students of JMU who have attended. We believe that the restructuring will build upon that success by being more intentionally positive with
the message.
