What Do You Mean DIE? - Descriptive Interpretation Evaluation
Course# TD1328

The purpose of this workshop is to:

  • Allow participants to practice an effective group discussion activity.
  • Become familiar with the concept of description, interpretation, and evaluation.
  • Establish norms when facilitating group discussions.
  • Become aware of value judgments.
  • Show the personal and cultural relativity of interpretations and evaluation.

A short cross-cultural video clip will be used to demonstrate that despite our best intentions, at times, we (human beings) tend to misunderstand one another… sometimes to the point of excluding and alienating one another. How we communicate is therefore crucial to ensure that we truly understand one another. There will be an explanation of the DIE (Description Interpretation Evaluation) model and how this model can be used to avoid such misunderstandings from taking place. The participants will then apply this model in small groups. This highly interactive session is meant to draw from participants' experiences as well as to challenge their assumptions in order to become more effective in conveying their message(s) and intentions and to not exclude, primarily, under-represented individuals.
