Transcending Race: Issues in Cultural Diversity
Course# TD1326

NOTE: You must pre-register for lunch and each concurrent session you plan on attending.

Educators and other professionals need to play a role in the development of cultural competencies and in the implementation of a multicultural curriculum in institutions of higher education. This interactive session will focus on identifying individual cultural competencies as a springboard for developing practice skills necessary for individuals working in clinical, community and educational settings. Participants will:

  • Assess their current cultural competencies.
  • Identify ways in which the assessment and understanding of one's culture and cultural competencies can help in the understanding of other cultures.
  • Use the cultural identity model as a way to better understand one's culture and other cultures.
  • Generate a list of professional practices that are influenced by their own culture and the culture of the clients they serve.
  • Identify unique characteristics of individuals from various ethnic backgrounds and generate a list of cross-cultural communication techniques and practices.
  • Develop a personal and organizational action plan for implementing cultural diversity in the work place by establishing goals and objectives, identifying necessary resources, and identifying process champions.
