Diversity Day-to-Day: Celebrating Difference Where You Least Expect It
Course# TD1334

NOTE: You must pre-register for lunch and each concurrent session you plan on attending.

Participants will explore ways in which they can work within their sphere of influence to personally contribute to the diversity enhancement efforts of the institution, in any job, at any level, and will focus on ways to make these ideas a reality. This program will use a conversational frame to discuss ways that individuals can make small changes within their power to encourage a positive movement towards both a more diverse campus, and a community more supportive of our minority populations. Participants will explore the concept that every single individual can make meaningful contributions to the university's diversity initiatives, and that it is often these small changes that can have the most significant impact on the community as a whole. The discussions will also focus on how individuals can help their entire office identify where they can improve their services and functions to better meet the needs of a diverse population. Strategies and tips on how to turn these thoughts into reality will be addressed and stories of both successes and failures will be shared. This program will also highlight the use of assessment when striving to make changes in the workplace, and will discuss the tools necessary to ensure the continued success and development of these changes once they are put into motion. Finally, the session will work towards empowering participants to personally seek out opportunities to connect with the universities initiative on diversity, and to do what they can within their own work to strengthen our community here at JMU.
