What are hours for Career and Academic
Planning?
Career and Academic Planning is open Monday
through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm during the academic year and on
Tuesdays from 8 am to 7 pm during the fall and spring
semesters.
I am an undeclared student looking for my
advisor. Where do I go?
Go to Career and Academic Planning, Wilson 301, to find
out who your advisor is and where to locate him or her. You may
also contact the office at 540-568-6555.
Do the advisors at Career and Academic
Planning see people other than undeclared students?
The advisors at Career and Academic Planning only
advise undeclared students, students interested in changing their
major, undeclared transfer students, and international students.
However, they do counsel all students about career development,
finding a job/internship, writing resumes/cover letters, pursuing
graduate school, and more.
I want to change my major from psychology to
undeclared. I have the form, where do I submit it?
Take the change of major form to the Registrar's
Student Records Services office in Warren, 5th
floor.
Where do I go to get my resume reviewed?
You have several options available to you. You
can visit Career and Academic Planning, 3rd floor,
Wilson Hall, to make an appointment with a career counselor to
review your resume or you can attend resume review events such as
Resume Round-up or Resume Express. Check out the department's
website for more information: http://www.jmu.edu/cap. It is also a good
idea to ask your academic advisor or professors to review your
resume to give you input about resume trends in your field of
study.

field. Where can I go to find them?
You have several options available to you. You
can visit the Career and Academic Planning Resource Center, Wilson
303. Resource Center staff can help you use the books, directories,
and online resources to assist your search for internships. You can
also visit the department's website: http://www.jmu.edu/cap/ to
search for internships by area of interest, job and internship
publications, and/or sign up for MadisonTRAK. Also speak with your
academic advisor and professors to see if they have ideas about
where to look for internships in your field(s). Be sure to check
with your major department to find out if they have an internship
coordinator and find out about receiving credit for internship
experiences.
Where do I get the results for the GRE, LSAT,
and MCAT?
You will receive the results from these
assessments directly from the testing services.

You have many resources available to you. You can

Resource Center staff can help you use the books, directories, and
online resources to assist your search for jobs. You can also visit
the job/internship search link on the department's website: http://www.jmu.edu/cap/ to search for jobs by
major or browse the job listings in the job and internship
publications. You may also make an appointment with an advisor to
help you with your job search.
Another option is to sign up for MadisonTRAK, which will enable you
to search the database for job openings and participate in
on-campus interviewing, mock interviews, and the
employers-in-residence program. Be sure to attend the career fairs
and bring copies of your resume. Also speak with your academic
advisor, professors, and department head to see if they have any
leads about potential jobs. Remember, networking is one of your
most valuable tools to finding a job!

What are the first 3 digits of an on-campus (resident) phone number?
If you are calling from off-campus, the first three digits of an on-campus resident phone number are 612. For a non-resident on-campus number, it is 568. Remember, if you are dialing from a campus phone, you only need to dial the last four digits of the phone number, preceded by a "2" for on-campus student numbers, or an "8" for offices on campus.
Where can I put up posters on campus?
All posters need to be approved by University Information guidelines. To find out the guidelines go to www.jmu.edu/getthewordout. The only place approved posters can be displayed is on general purpose bulletin boards.
