We know that the big issues facing our world - energy, biotechnology, the environment - often fall outside the confines of traditional academic disciplines. That's one reason we foster rich collaboration among students and professors from many different disciplines. We are recognized nationally for our undergraduate research opportunities. We are all about innovative, hands-on learning that prepares our students to be catalysts for real change in their communities and around the world.
Engineering - Our new engineering program is focused on sustainability with an emphasis on engineering design and systems analysis.
Center for Energy and Environmental Sustainability - This is a unique opportunity for faculty and students from all our programs to address issues of alternative energy/fuel and the impact on the environment in an applied, integrated manner.
Phage Genomics course - Starting this fall and available for entering freshmen, JMU is offering a yearlong course involving isolating bacterial viruses (phages) from soil, preparing viral DNA for sequencing, and annotating and comparing the sequenced genome. We are among 12 schools chosen for this honor by the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute as part of its Science Education Alliance.
