JMU’s Climbing club is a student led organization where new and experienced climbers learn basic climbing techniques and are challenged to reach further through weekly climbing sessions, competitions, and an inclusive, friendly environment. This club currently consists of approximately 20 members.

Practices: We meet from 8-10pm on Mondays at the new rock wall within the adventure center at UREC. These weekly meetings start with club announcements, a lesson on either technique or other climbing related topic, and free climb, play climbing games, or train for the remainder of the meeting.

Competitions: For those who want to compete in competitions there are two options. Through USA climbing and regional citizen competitions. .

Student that want to compete in the USA Climbing Collegiate Circuit must pay additional dues to the USA Climbing Club to become registered, than the additional competition fee. In order to compete in USA Climbing Regionals competitors must compete in one collegiate level competitions before gaining eligibility. The benefit is that some competitions are exclusively for USA climbing members and if you qualify than that person has the ability to compete in the USA climbing regional and national circuits.

In lieu of competing on the collegiate series, members have the option of participating in citizen competitions individually. These are climbing competitions at regional gyms where members have the opportunity to go with others, and are not competing under the JMU banner.  

How to Join: There are no tryouts to be in the club, all JMU students who are interested in climbing and want to join may do so. All members are required is paying dues, obtaining a belay certification through UREC, and community service. Those interested should contact our Prime Minister to find out our next scheduled practice!
