Gate Access

Vehicles authorized to access the gated portion of campus include:

  • Emergency vehicles
  • Buses
  • Service vehicles
  • Specific vendors
  • Individuals requiring handicap parking

Contact Don Egle at 540-568-3621 or egledk@jmu.edu with access questions.

Signage

Two digital signs have been installed on South Main Street. These signs are intended to inform drivers when the gates are down and campus is closed. The signs will be blank when the gates are up and the campus is open. Furthermore, stationary signs will be added to appropriate locations on campus to assist drivers in navigating the campus.

Gate Communication

Each gate location is equipped with technology that is similar to the E-ZPass technology used at tollbooths. The gates raise to allow authorized vehicles to pass. Drivers who do not have authorization to the gate-restricted portion of campus should not approach any of the gate locations. Drivers who are not aware of the changes have space to turn around. Drivers who have a special request to access the gate-restricted area will be able to contact JMU Police Dispatch. Not all access requests will be approved. To contact JMU Police Dispatch from the Bluestone/South Main Street gate or the Bluestone/Carrier Drive gate, a driver can use an installed call box. The Duke Drive gate and the bookstore gate have signs with the phone number to JMU Police Dispatch.
