Social Involvement

Academic success is only part of your JMU experience. Developing a social network and involvement in student organizations will compliment your academic experience. JMU has more than 300 student organizations for you to get involved. We're not suggesting that you get involved in every one of them; that would be overwhelming! But, we strongly encourage you to pick a few based on your current interests, or an interest you would like to explore.

Center for Multicultural Student Services (CMSS)

CMSS celebrates diversity by heightening awareness and educating the campus community regarding ethnic and cultural diversity. If you are interested in getting involved with student organizations such as Black Student Alliance, Women of Color, Asian Student Union, other ethnic and cultural student and Greek organizations, visit CMSS online.

CMSS is located in Warren Hall, Room 245.

JMU Athletics

You don't have to be an athlete to enjoy JMU sports. The university offers a variety of sports teams, and you can attend events for little or no cost. Check out all the team sports, rosters, and schedules on the JMU Athletics Web site. Show your purple and gold spirit!

LGBT & Ally Community Resources

JMU offers several organizations and resources that support the LGBT & Ally community. The Safe Zone JMU website provides a list of student and professional staff organizations, as well as personnel resources in and around the Harrisonburg community. Through programs and services, Safe Zones JMU educates and informs university faculty, staff, and students about educational and other issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. For more information, visit Safe Zones JMU online.

Student Employment

One thing is for sure, if you're a college student you have a tuition bill to pay. If you need a little financial assistance with those bills, or just want a little extra lunch money consider getting a job. The Student Employment Office posts on- and off-campus job opportunities.

Interested in sharing your transfer experience with prospective and incoming transfer students? Consider working for the JMU Transfer Experience! We offer several positions throughout the year and with varying levels of time commitment. Since students in these positions work directly with prospective and incoming transfer students, we only hire current JMU students that have transferred into the university. Click here to learn more how you can work for the Transfer Experience.

Office of Student Activities and Involvement

The Office of Student Activities and Involvement is home to all of the Clubs and Organizations on JMU's campus.  It is our goal to provide programming, resources, support, and events for all of the groups recognized through our office at JMU. Examples of organizations housed in SOS are Student Government Association, University Programming Board, and Fraternity and Sorority Life. There are also other organizations that focus on leadership such as Make Your Mark On Madison (MYMOM) and Outriggers. Interested in learning about knitting? Check out Knitwits. We told you we had something for everyone! For a complete listing of all student clubs and organizations, click here.

The Office of Student Activities and Involvement is located in Taylor Hall, Room 205a.

University Recreation (UREC)

Another great way to meet new friends and get involved is through UREC. Besides getting a great workout, they offer several outdoor adventure trips. UREC offers trips and programs for the amateur adventure as well as those looking for a little extreme adventure. Their trips also provide a great opportunity to explore the Shenandoah Valley, including the national forests. Interested in intramural sports? Whether you're interested in joining a team or serving as an official, UREC is your one-stop shop for intramural sports.
