Academic
Standing and Continued Enrollment
There are some specific academic expectations
associated with being a JMU student. All students are expected to
maintain satisfactory progress toward attaining a degree. In most
cases this is measured by grade point average. JMU has implemented
academic standards to identify students that may be experiencing
academic difficulty and to provide timely intervention through
academic support programs.

Career and Academic
Planning
You can major in almost anything and still achieve
your career goals. For instance, not every student that wants to go
to medical school majors in one of the sciences. A student may choose
to major in English, business, or psychology.
Career and Academic Planning (CAP) have
professionals on staff to help you connect the dots between your
academic interests and your career aspirations. CAP understands
that your academic pursuits will impact your life after graduation.
If you have questions, feel free to make an appointment with an
adviser. You can also access a lot of helpful information online by
linking to their Career Guide to JMU
Majors. You can look up your major and see the career fields
that may be open to you.
Career and Academic Planning is located on the
3rd floor of Wilson Hall.
Changing
Majors
To change your major, you should obtain a Change or
Declaration of Major Form from the Registrar's Office. This form
needs to be approved and signed by the head of the academic
department you wish to enter. Please be aware that changing majors
may impact your transfer credits and/or you may need to complete
additional prerequisites for the new major.
Credit
Appeals
You may have received "000" on your transfer credit
evaluation, but believe that course should be counted toward a
specific JMU course. You are welcome to appeal any of your
transfer credits, but it will take a little effort on your
part.
To appeal for credit, first you need to gather a
little information. A course description from a catalog will do,
but a syllabus would be most helpful for each course you want to
appeal for credit. Second, look through the JMU course catalog to
find a JMU course which most closely matches the course you want to
appeal. After you have gathered the necessary information, contact
the appropriate office according to the information below.
To appeal for General Education Credit
Contact Dr. Herb Amato in the
General Education department. Dr. Amato can be reached by
email at amatohk@jmu.edu.
To appeal for credit in a specific major
Contact the academic department in which you would
like to receive credit. For instance, if you want to appeal "000"
credit to count toward an English course, you should contact the
English Department directly.
Honor
Code
Students shall observe complete honesty in all
academic matters. Each student has a duty to become familiar with
the Honor Code and the provisions of the Honor system.
As a new JMU student, you must complete the Honor
Code tutorial and take the Honor Code test before the end of your
first semester. Failure to do so will result in a hold being placed
on your student account. To read the Honor Code in full, complete
the tutorial, and take the test click here.
Study
Abroad
