Hello and Goodbye

Welcome and hello to Stephenie Williams, HR’s new Front Desk Assistant. Stephenie has been working in HR on a part-time basis since September, 2015; she officially begins full-time employment on July 10.

We say a fond goodbye to Diane Ricketson and Krystal Smith, both of whom have been with Human Resources for many years in full-time and part-time roles.

University Holiday Monday, July 4

The university will be closed on Monday, July 4 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Holidays are granted in an eight hour increment. Full-time employee modified summer schedules should be adjusted to account for 32 hours Tuesday-Friday, July 5-8. Any hours short of a 32 hour workweek should be charged to available leave. Contact Meghan Schaeffer, Leave Coordinator, with any questions.

Mid-Year Leave Liability Reporting

In order for the university’s leave records to be as accurate as possible for the Commonwealth leave liability report, it is important that classified employees enter all outstanding leave requests for January 10 through June 30 into MyMadison prior to June 28 for supervisor approval. This will provide a snapshot of all leave balances as of the end of the fiscal year.

Open Enrollment Changes

Health Insurance, Aflac, and flexible spending account changes that occurred during May’s open enrollment period will be reflected in your July 16 pay advice. Please review your pay advice for accuracy. If there is a discrepancy, please contact benefits@jmu.edu immediately.

Review Your Purchase of Prior Service Options Now

Purchase of prior service provisions are changing on January 1, 2017, and those changes may result in higher cost and fewer months of service eligible for purchase. Now’s the time to see if you have prior service you can purchase and whether it’s better to purchase it this year or wait until after January 1.

Prior service includes public employment, active duty military service, an eligible period of leave or VRS refunded service. Prior service credit counts toward the five years needed to become vested, eligibility for retirement and the health insurance credit.

If you decide to purchase service before January 1, you should apply no later than October 1, 2016. Any payments received after December 30, 2016, will be processed under the provisions that become effective January 1, 2017.

Classified Employee Performance Evaluations

Annual performance evaluations for non-probationary classified employees may be completed and submitted to Human Resources anytime beginning July 1 through September 30, 2016. To ensure thorough and thoughtful evaluation of employee performance, this is an ideal time for:

  • employees and supervisors to receive and provide open and honest feedback on the past year’s performance;
  • employees to communicate their perspectives on performance through a self-evaluation;
  • employees to communicate their perspectives on performance through a self-evaluation;
  • supervisors to make any necessary adjustments to the position description through PositionLink

As outlined in the Salary Administration Plan and Policy 1305 - Performance Evaluation for Classified Employees, there are five performance rating levels to choose from: Below Contributor, Moderate Contributor, Contributor, High Contributor and Extraordinary Contributor. Ratings are contingent on continued performance for the duration of the performance cycle which officially ends October 24.

JMU Continues to be targeted by Email Phishing Campaigns

These bad emails are from, or appear to be, from a JMU email address to JMU people, claiming to be about JMU activities, including human resources and payroll. They contain information that looks like legitimate JMU content and links to legitimate-looking login pages. Clicking on the links within these phishing messages and providing your e-ID and password allows someone else to take over your account and perform critical activities as though they are you. Anytime you receive email from a JMU department or individual and question its validity, please contact that department/individual directly for verification.

If you are not sure a link is legitimate, don’t click on it! You can forward the email as an attachment to abuse@jmu.edu for guidance. For additional information, see http://www.jmu.edu/computing/security
