Getting Here

Campus Map Florence

By taxi

Taxi is a convenient way to get to JMU's Palazzo Capponi but it will also be the more expensive mode of transportation if you are arriving at Florence Peretola Airport or one of the two major Florence railway stations: Firenze Santa Maria Novella or Firenze Campo di Marte. All city taxis are metered and must either be booked via telephone (+39 055 4242) or picked up at a designated taxi stand. Taxis cannot be hailed from the street. Intracity transport can cost anywhere from €5-25 depending on the trip, with airport transportation costing between €20-23 plus a supplement of €1 per piece of luggage. Directions to drivers should be to "Via dei Michelozzi 2," the street that bisects Via Maggio (the main street off of which Palazzo Capponi is located) and Piazza Santo Spirito. The part of town is known as "Oltrarno" or "the other side of the Arno," referring to the historic center of Florence.

By bus or tram

Florence's main train station, Santa Maria Novella, is well connected to the airport by bus or by tram. From the station, you can reach James Madison University by foot, bus or taxi. City buses that pass by include the 11, 36, 37, C3 and D. Bus tickets valid for 90 minutes cost €1.50 and can be purchased at newsstands and tabacchi's at the airport, train stations, and other points throughout the city.

By foot

By foot JMU's Palazzo Capponi is approximately 20 minutes away from the main Santa Maria Novella train station. It is easily reached by Ponte Santa Trinità if coming from the North side of the Arno river and is a 5 minute walk from the historic Ponte Vecchio and the city's historic center.

By car

By car Palazzo Capponi can be reached by Via Maggio or Via del Presto di San Martino. It is recommended that those with a car find parking at the outer limits of the city (at the entrance of the Porta Romana or Porta San Frediano, for example), as parking is limited in the immediate area.
