As a Finance major at JMU, you’ll learn how to evaluate investments, assess financial risk and make decisions that affect how organizations manage money.
Finance attracts students who are curious about how money moves, how investment opportunities are evaluated and how risk and return are balanced to make informed decisions. They are typically analytical, detail-oriented thinkers who are comfortable working with numbers and data, interested in markets and investing, and able to solve problems with a focus on results.
The program prepares you to work with financial data and evaluate opportunities in areas like corporate finance, financial planning, real estate, banking and investment management, where you’ll help organizations allocate capital, manage assets and plan for growth across individual, corporate, governmental and international markets.
What you’ll gain
- The ability to evaluate investments, assess risk and make decisions about how money is managed
- Experience analyzing financial data and identifying opportunities across different markets
- An understanding of how organizations allocate capital, manage assets and plan for growth
- Access to the Gaglioti Capital Markets Lab with Bloomberg terminals and access to current industry software
- Opportunities to connect with employers through events like Meet the Firms, where you’ll network with companies, explore internships and gain direct insight into careers in finance

"I would not be where I am today without the profound professors who are devoted to teaching students both in and outside of the classroom, the prestigious finance clubs and organizations and the extraordinary financial equipment (the Capital Markets Lab) that is available to students at JMU."
