Heritage speakers of Arabic and international students who are native speakers of Arabic and who need to satisfy the university language requirement, or want to take Arabic courses, or want to pursue a minor or major in Arabic, must abide by the following guidelines:

  1. Heritage speakers of Arabic who would like to pursue a major or minor in Arabic must take an Arabic placement test or obtain the permission of the Arabic language coordinator. Placement into ARAB 300 is required in order to qualify to take the examination for credit for ARAB 300. Students who pass the examination for credit for ARAB 300 are entitled to register in other ARAB courses that have 300 as a prerequisite or to proceed to take the examination for credit for ARAB 320.
  2. International students who are native speakers of Arabic and would like to pursue a major or minor in Arabic need to take the examination for credit for ARAB 300 and ARAB 320 and then register for more advanced courses.
  3. Heritage speakers and international students who need to satisfy a language requirement need to complete a waiver form after being tested for proficiency.
  4. Heritage speakers and international students who wish to take elective credits in Arabic need to be tested for proficiency.
