Transfer Policy
General Education
JMU's general education program is an interdisciplinary, sequenced program. There are few direct course equivalents in Virginia's community college system. Because of JMU's strong commitment to providing the opportunity for students to transfer from Virginia community colleges, the university has worked to designate reasonable equivalents in this transfer guide. This guide and the course equivalencies laid out within are intended for student planning to transfer to JMU. Students already matriculated at JMU must receive prior permission from the general education program to take any course for transfer credit and JMU does not guarantee that permission will be granted.
Program Equivalents
JMU's general education program is composed of five areas of study called clusters. Each cluster provides both depth and breadth in the exploration of an area of human knowledge. In each cluster, students choose a group of courses called a package. Courses within an individual package are coordinated to provide a coherent educational experience. The information in clusters one through five (located on the navigation bar on the left) are groups of courses that are designed to provide similar background for transfer students, though they do not always match exactly with packages offered at JMU.
Matriculated Students
This transfer admission guide and the course equivalencies laid out in this Web site are intended for students planning to transfer to JMU from a Virginia community college or Richard Bland College. Students already matriculated at JMU must receive prior permission from the general education program to take any general education course for transfer credit, and JMU does not guarantee that permission will be granted. JMU students are encouraged to consult the general education program for further information on transfer credit.
Foreign Language Note
Credit will not be given for 101 and 102 in a foreign language that a student has studied in high school or at another university. A student who has had two or more years of a foreign language in high school will not be allowed to enroll in 101 or the intensive 111 for credit in the same language. The student will have the following choices:
- Enroll in 231 or above for credit
- Enroll in 101 or 102 with no credit
- Begin a new foreign language
