General Education Cluster One: Skills for the 21st Century
12 credit hours
Cluster One is the cornerstone of the general education program at JMU. This cluster emphasizes competencies in the areas of oral and written communication, critical thinking, technology used for communication, and information retrieval and evaluation. Competence in these areas is fundamental to general education and to subsequent study in major and professional programs.

In addition to course requirements for Cluster One, students must pass two technology competency exams. Tech Level I is on basic computer skills and the Information Seeking Skills Test is on information technology.
