VCCS - JMU Course Equivalents

Psychology

The Department of Psychology welcomes transfer students who wish to declare the Psychology Major.  Upon admission to JMU, all students may declare the Psychology Major.  However, to make progress in the major beyond the first few courses, students need to apply and be admitted to the major.

Transfer students who have successfully completed courses equivalent to GPSYC 101 and MATH 220 (Statistics) or MATH 205, 231, or 235 (Calculus) may declare the major during the transfer orientation program and these students will be fully admitted into the major immediately.

Transfer students who have not completed courses equivalent to GPSYC 101 and MATH 220 (Statistics) or MATH 205, 231, or 235 (Calculus) may declare the major during the transfer orientation program but they will not be guaranteed admission to the Psychology Major.  These transfer students must take Gpsyc 101 and/or our prerequisite math courses during their first semester at JMU.  Like students who start at JMU as freshmen, they must successfully complete at least 15 credit hours of coursework at JMU, earn a 2.6 GPA at JMU, and apply for admission to the Psychology Major.  All students who meet these progression standards will be admitted to the Psychology Major.

Students with 2 or more years of college completed when they are admitted to JMU need to be aware that the psychology major at JMU consists of courses that must be taken in a sequence.  It will take at least 5 semesters to complete this sequence unless the courses students typically take as Freshman and Sophomores are completed before the student begins at JMU.

Like most undergraduate psychology major programs, JMU requires students to complete courses in psychological statistics and research methods. Unlike some other programs, at JMU these courses are prerequisites to all of our junior and senior-level psychology courses. During their second year in college, JMU psychology majors are expected to complete PSYC 210 (Psychological Statistics) PSYC 211 (Psychological Research Methods) or an equivalent integrated methodology course sequence PSYCH 212-213. Students should take these courses before they begin their junior year. If these courses are not available at a student’s community college, consider enrolling as a special student at a nearby institution that offers these courses. Alternatively, you might complete one of these courses at JMU during the summer prior to your junior year.

Some additional psychology courses may be accepted as psychology electives (PSYC 000) or as university electives (PSYC 002). PSYC 002 credits will count toward graduation but not toward general education or the psychology major. Please contact one of the Assistant Department Heads in Psychology (ugpsyc@jmu.edu or (540) 568-6114) for assistance with transfer credit for psychology courses.

1 Even though these are 4 credit courses at JMU, completion of the VCCS courses will satisfy JMU Psychology's requirements for the Psychology Major, however, students who complete these VCCS courses will need to take an additional PSYC course (free elective) to complete the minimum credit hour requirement for the major.
