Transfers - Admission Agreements
JMU has guaranteed admission agreements with several community colleges and one junior college in Virginia. The purpose of these agreements is to ease the transfer process and to promote the close coordination of academic courses, programs and degrees offered.
Current Guaranteed Admissions Agreements
Students participating in a Guaranteed Admission Agreement (GAA) program are required to submit an application for admission as well as a completed Letter of Intent by the application deadline. See your counselor at your current college to complete your Letter of Intent form.
We currently have GAAs with the following colleges in Virginia:
- Blue Ridge Community College
- Dabney S. Lancaster Community College
- Danville Community College
- Germanna Community College

- John Tyler Community College
- Lord Fairfax Community College
- Northern Virginia Community College
- Paul D. Camp Community College

To be eligible to participate, you must meet the following requirements:

- Have completed at least 45 credits at the time of application.
- Have not earned any grade lower than a C in a course that you have not repeated.

- Have not repeated more than two different courses and have not repeated one course more than two times.
If you do not all of the above requirements, you are still allowed to apply to JMU, but your admission is not guaranteed.
Other Notes About the GAA:
- Guaranteed admission to JMU does not guarantee admission to a specific major. Many majors have additional admission requirements and/or application processes.
- JMU does not accept Associate in Applied Sciences degrees toward the fulfillment of General Education requirements.
Associate Degrees
With the exception of associates degrees in some General Studies programs and in accordance with the State Policy on Transfer, JMU will waive general education requirements and grant junior-level status to admitted students who have completed an Associate in Arts, an Associate in Science, or an Associates in Arts and Sciences degree at Richard Bland College or any Virginia community college. In addition, Associate Degrees in General Studies programs at the following community colleges have been approved by the State Committee on Transfer for recognition under the conditions of the State Policy on Transfer:
- Dabney S. Lancaster Community College
- Germanna Community College
- Lord Fairfax Community College
- Mountain Empire Community College
- Patrick Henry Community College
- Piedmont Virginia Community College
- Southside Virginia Community College
- Southwest Virginia Community College

- Wytheville Community College
If you transfer to JMU from a Virginia community college or Richard Bland College without earning an associate's degree, your credits will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis as specified in the appropriate edition of the JMU Transfer Guide for Virginia community colleges and Richard Bland College.
Pre-Teacher Education Admission Agreement
JMU also has a Pre-Teacher Education Admission Agreement with the Blue Ridge Community College, Lord Fairfax Community College and Piedmont Virginia Community College. This agreement was created to facilitate transfer entry into teacher education programs in Virginia. The PTEAA applies to all licensure programs except PreK-12 music.
The PTEAA does not guarantee automatic admission to the university. Please see a counselor at your participating institution to learn more about the requirements.
