Why did you choose JMU?
When I began my search for Colleges, James Madison University stood out to me because of all it had to offer. It has a great positive environment and excellent academic classes as well as diversified resources that could help me develop my skills in the long run. I was first introduced to JMU by my brother and sister who attended JMU and are graduating this year, I wasn't sure I wanted to go to the same University as my siblings at first but the more I thought about it, the more the thought grew on me. Although there are many positive aspects to attending JMU, the people and the tight knit community is just one of many reasons i was drawn to coming here. Now that I'm here, I honestly can't imagine myself anywhere else.
What is your favorite class?
My favorite class so far would have to be GCOM 123. Although speaking in front of the whole class did not sound appealing at all in the beginning, the professor, Paul Mabrey just made the class interesting and as comfortable as possible. It wasn't a large class so getting to know every body wasn't hard, which just made the class have an easy going environment. To say the least, the class was entertaining and educational, Mabrey incorporated learning with fun activities and games every once in a while. GCOM is a mandatory class that should be taken before sophomore year and I highly recommend enrolling in this class.
Besides studying, how do you occupy your time?
There are so many things offered in JMU that you can do during your free time. When I’m not studying, I like to go watch a movie at Grafton with my friends or attend the many different events that are always held in JMU. Sometimes, I also like staying in my dorm and read a book or bake cookies with my friends and watch a movie down in the TV lounge. Although small, Harrisonburg has so many places to visit... so sometimes my friends and I explore the different restaurants and shops that the city has to offer.
What clubs/activities are you involved with at JMU?
JMU offers so many different clubs that it is impossible not to find the perfect one for you. I am currently in "Campus Assault ResponsE" aka "CARE" which is a tight knit group of people that run a 24/7 help line to help anyone in need. I am also a part of Madison International, "MI" which is a program that promotes diversity and teaches everyone the importance of all the different cultures and ethnicities that exist within our society. As a result of my involvement with these two organizations,
What do you like best about JMU?
There are so many things I could say about what I like about JMU but what has stood out to me the most is just how friendly and welcoming everyone is here. JMU has such an open and safe environment that encourages you to pursue anything without a fear of failure or doubt. JMU's kind atmosphere makes it a place that you can call home.
What advice would you give to international students who are considering studying at JMU?
The best thing you can do is join different clubs and organizations. No Matter where you're from, JMU has the perfect organization or club for you. JMU is a place that embraces diversity so where no matter what, you will feel welcomed and at home.
