Why JMU?

First of all, JMU has a really outstanding business program. The quality of education I’ve experienced is really nice; the business curriculum is designed to prepare you step by step to become business professional and professors are patient and helpful. The college often invites companies and firms to come around, which provide many job opportunities. Also, JMU is in a good location. Personally, I prefer peaceful small towns, where is a good place to study. At the same time, JMU is only 2 hour away from DC. You can still experience the phenomenon of big prosperous city and enjoy various places of interests and events.

What's your favorite class?

I am taking a fundamental music class right now, which is very interesting. I’ve learned instruments before but after high school, since getting busier and busier, this hobby was gradually abandoned. However, I am so glad that I have a chance to learn music course again here in JMU. The professor also makes this course very attractive. It would be so nice that I can choose elective to relax myself and develop extra hobbies.

Besides studying, how do you occupy your time?

When I have free time at home, I like to cook with friends, and enjoy delicious meals together. I also like to hang out with friends and talk to different people to broaden my horizon. When the weather is cold outside, I like to stay at home, make a cup of hot tea for myself and listen to music or watch movies. Sometime I also play video games.

What clubs and activities are you involved with at JMU?

I’ve been involved in the multi-cultural organizations including Chinese Student and Scholar Association and Asian Student Union. In both organizations, I’ve met a lot of nice people and made so many friends. Being involved in the organization has helped me to improve a lot in various abilities. I’ve helped to host several culture shows and showcases, which push me develop a lot in organizing and communicating abilities. I’ve also attended some honor society including Beta Alpha Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma. These are business organizations that will bridge students and industry professionals. Through the events the honor societies have hosted, students can communicate with recruiters, companies’ managers and many other professionals in business industry. This will help a great deal for future career development.

What do you like best about JMU?

JMU has a very friendly and helpful environment. When you are around campus, you see people smile at each other; there are people talking friendly in elevator; professor and staff are always there to assist you; when someone is in trouble, everyone would be glad to help.  When I first came  to JMU, I was pretty shy and too nervous to talk with other people. However, they are always patient to listen to me, encouraging me to talk more and have told me ‘It’s totally fine to make mistakes’. I believe that those kinds of encouragements are one of the most important reasons that inspire me to make progress.

What is the one thing you wish you had known about JMU prior to arriving on campus?

I would like to tell myself in the past that go outside to reach people and receive new information frequently and don’t be afraid of not knowing something. If you put effort to research information, you can handle everything. It’s normal that when coming to a new environment, you have no idea what to do. JMU has a very good information system and a bunch of helpful people. As long as you are willing to get information, to search, to ask and listen, you will eventually get the answer and be more and more familiar in the new campus.
