Digital badging and microcredentialing enable recognition of skills learned and acheivements gained by credit and non-credit students in a sharable, digital format.

What is a Digital Badge?

A digital badge is a digital token that validates the learner’s mastery of skills and competencies that carry career value. It combines a visual token with rich metadata, such as required learner-produced artifacts and assessment by grantors, and may be "stacked" to achieve a certification or even degree.

For more information, see the Microcredentialing Task Force 2024 end-of-year report for definitions and relevant research.

What is a Microcredential?

Underneath the digital badge umbrella, microcredentials are "digital certifications that verify competence of a skill or set of skills" (Tinsley et al. 2022). Learners can share their microcredentials to exemplify their discrete skills and use the digital badge token to detail their learning experience.

How Can I Create a Digital Badge?

All JMU digital badging is managed through the School of Professional & Continuing education, and created by the respective academic unit/faculty member, to maintain JMU's institutional identity and brand.
