Dr. Tim Miller Wins NASPA Award

Dr. Tim Miller, Vice President for Student Affairs, won the NASPA Region III John Jones Award for Outstanding Performance as a Senior Student Affairs Officer. Nominees of the John Jones award are individuals who have showcased leadership across the university with staff and students and have produced positive changes at their institution. Nominees identify and respond to the needs of students, advocating and implementing systematic change when necessary. Nominees have become a pillar of support for the students they serve. Dr. Miller exemplifies these traits and is highly praised and respected by students, staff, and other institutions in the state.
To students, Dr. Miller is someone who truly understands them. Many feel he takes the time to genuinely get to know each student he interacts with, creating meaningful and interpersonal connections. Kendall Cole, a student who co-facilitated a class with him, states, “Tim is the kind of leader whose impact is both visible and deeply felt, transforming systems while never losing sight of individual students.” Dr. Miller not only fosters care with the students he serves, but also with the faculty he supports.
Staff recognize Dr. Miller as a leader who strives for their success both personally and professionally. His team shared their experiences working with him, expressing how his actions create an impact. From sacrificing his time to making a commitment to his team, Tim consistently makes them feel united in being better professionals. Dr. Miller holds space for the students and staff he serves, portraying his authenticity through his actions.
Dr. Miller was profoundly moved upon learning that he received this award. He was especially touched by the care and appreciation students and staff have for him. He states, “I was incredibly surprised to be honored in this way, and it means a great deal to me. I think what meant the most was seeing the list of colleagues, students, and fellow Vice Presidents from across Virginia and DC that sent in letters of support for my nomination. To know that these individuals took the time to support this nomination and that they think highly enough of me to honor me means the world.” Dr. Miller humbly expresses that he is grateful for the award as it has become a motivator for his future endeavors. He states, “This award has actually pushed me to work harder as I don’t believe I have done enough to have earned it so I am appreciative also for the motivation it has given me as I continue my work for JMU, our students, and all of Virginia Student Affairs.”
Congratulations to Dr. Tim Miller. He continues to exhibit inspirational leadership and has become a guiding voice for James Madison University.
